<image:title>Michael Brown Jr., Aug. 9, 2014</image:title>
<image:caption>On Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, Darren Wilson, a white Ferguson police officer in Missouri, shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man. Some witnesses say Brown had his hands raised over his head and was surrendering. Another account, according to an investigator, is that Brown assaulted Wilson, reached for the officer's gun and was charging toward the officer when he was shot.

Brown's death sparked a massive response from those upset with what they viewed as an unjustified shooting and the continued targeting of African-American people by police.

A candlelight vigil on Sunday, Aug. 10 for Brown turned violent as police and protesters squared off. The outnumbered police withdrew from the area to call in back up and crowds began to loot businesses and riot in the streets.

Weeks of sustained, sometimes violent, protests followed. On the most intense nights of unrest some protesters threw rocks, bottles, Molotov cocktails, fired gunshots and set fires. In response police used tear gas, rubber bullets and flashbang grenades to break up the crowd.

The days and weeks have stretched into months of protests. Protesters are calling for the arrest of Officer Wilson on murder charges and are seeking wider systematic change. Local, state and federal officials have all launched investigations into the shooting. Currently the region is waiting for the grand jury's decision about whether or not Officer Wilson will face charges in connection with the shooting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lezley McSpadden-Head visits the grave of her son Michael Brown at Saint Peter's Cemetery in Normandy on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024. Friday was the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown being shot and killed on Canfield Drive by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson. Brown's killing was the catalyst for protests and unrest around the world that focused on police accountability and civil rights and breathed life into the Black Lives Matter movement. About a half dozen family and friends joined McSpadden-Head at the grave where they laid down roses and released doves. She says she prefers to have a quiet day to remember her son on the anniversary of his death but celebrated her son's birthday in May with a party where local high school graduates were awarded college scholarshipsPhoto by David Carson, dcarson@post-dispatch.com</image:caption>

The spot on Canfield Drive is where Michael Brown laid four and half hours after he was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9, 2014. Family, friends, local activists and community members gather at the spot every year before a ceremony on Aug. 9th to mark the shooting. Brown's death ignited a new era of social activism and civil rights protests in the United States. Johnson was with Michael Brown when the shooting happened and the only known witness to the entire event, spoke to the crowd at the memorial. "I feel the pain of the family. <image:caption>August 2002--“They attacked us. That brought us together” said Pastor Sammie E. Jones of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis. Jones says that for some African Americans, patriotism is a double edged sentiment, given that they are the descendants of slaves and still witness social and racial injustices in this country. He fears an encroachment on civil liberties in the United States in the name of homeland security. Jones, a U.S. Army veteran, said that America is his home too-and that people of all colors and creeds died in the terror attacks. "No matter what, I still love my country.” says Jones.

Mary Gaffney and two other people were killed by trains the same day as 14-year-old Cam Vennard, from Kirkwood, was stuck and killed by a train.

<image:title>A CSX freight train rolls along a set of tracks on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 in Riverdale Park, Md., at the spot where a man, 41-year-old Bradford Bacon, was struck and killed by a train in March of 2011. Bacon's death was ruled a suicide, but his family doesn't believe that. Bacon's sister, Jessica Bacon, pointed out that CSX told the Federal Railroad Administration that her brother was lying on the tracks when he was hit. But a county police spokesman said the train's video showed the victim standing with both arms raised. The area has several well worn paths cut by pedestrians crossing the tracks.

<image:title>A man carrying a baby stroller across a set of train tracks in Hyattsville, Md., is stopped by CXS railroad police on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012. Even though the officer was only in the area performing surveillance of the tracks on an unrelated investigation he said he feels compelled to stop people who are trespassing when he sees it. The man with the stroller, who did not want to be identified, was given a warning by the police. Two fatalities have occurred in the area where the man crossed the tracks. There are several no trespassing signs posted along either side of the tracks.

<image:title>A Canadian Pacific train rolls by a barbed wire fence as it passes farmer Jerry Gibson's cows and calves eating their morning hay at his farm outside of Newtown, Mo., on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012. Missouri is one of 26 states that have laws saying railroads are liable for livestock struck by trains along unfenced tracks. Gibson's lawyer sent a letter to Canadian Pacific demanding the railroad put up a fence after four of his cows were killed by trains in 2011. Months later the railroad installed about mile of fencing to protect the cows.
