<image:title>After kissing the tips of her fingers Vanessa Riley reaches out to touch the box containing the ashes Dante Bonzano, father to her three children, as she goes to bed for the night at her home in south St. Louis on Thursday, April 6, 2017. Riley keeps the ashes on her nightstand next to a box of his personal items because she says she hasn't gotten used to the idea he's gone. Bonzano had been on Vivitrol to help him control his addiction to heroin. He died on February 8, 2017 of an apparent overdose. In 2016 273 city residents last year, more than double the previous year, died of fatal opioid overdoses. Heroin is being cut with fentanyl to increase the high but the fentanyl is so powerful it leading to a sharp increase in deaths from overdoses.</image:title>

Davis, a recovering heroin addict, entered the Queen of Peace program to help her kick her heroin addiction when she found out she was pregnant with Camden. She is taking weekly drug tests now to prove that she is clean and will soon be moving into her own apartment. Her hope is after proving she is clean and moving into her own apartment she'll be able to regain custody of her other children that were taken away by the state when she was using drugs.</image:title>

Skinner was arrested a few weeks earlier when police spotted him in an alley as he was going through a bag of jewelry he says he "found" in a vacant building. When police ran Skinner's name a warrant for his arrested popped up for a probation violation. Skinner has bounced in and out of both federal and state prisons for most of his adult. He says prison time doesn't bother him and that in a way it's good because he is able to get clean from drugs while he is behind bars.</image:title>

Heather Hayes was 14 when she was struck and killed by a train while walking home from school. Almost twenty year after Hayes' death community reaction to another train fatality involving a different 14 year-old, Kristen Bowen, helped get fences put up along the tracks near the middle school and a nearby park.

The crossing is marked with no trespassing signs those signs are generally ignored or go unnoticed by pedestrians crossing the tracks. Hagen says he takes the short cut because it's quicker than walking around to the underpass.

<image:title>A CSX freight train rolls along a set of tracks on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 in Riverdale Park, Md., at the spot where a man, 41-year-old Bradford Bacon, was struck and killed by a train in March of 2011. Bacon's death was ruled a suicide, but his family doesn't believe that. Bacon's sister, Jessica Bacon, pointed out that CSX told the Federal Railroad Administration that her brother was lying on the tracks when he was hit. But a county police spokesman said the train's video showed the victim standing with both arms raised. The area has several well worn paths cut by pedestrians crossing the tracks.

Even though the officer was only in the area performing surveillance of the tracks on an unrelated investigation he said he feels compelled to stop people who are trespassing when he sees it. The man with the stroller, who did not want to be identified, was given a warning by the police. Two fatalities have occurred in the area where the man crossed the tracks. There are several no trespassing signs posted along either side of the tracks.

Missouri is one of 26 states that have laws saying railroads are liable for livestock struck by trains along unfenced tracks. Gibson's lawyer sent a letter to Canadian Pacific demanding the railroad put up a fence after four of his cows were killed by trains in 2011. Months later the railroad installed about mile of fencing to protect the cows.

The heated argument occurred as a balloon release for four victims of a fatal hit-and-run crash was ending. The argument was over "disrespect" and involved multiple people with drawn guns on the street and people in a passing car with guns. Outnumbered and outgunned, police officers at the memorial put out an aid call requesting backup. "I don't give a f*** if the police are here" one of the men shouted. Shakur, a community activists and regular protester, was standing at the intersection with a sign that read "How does it feel??" when Forder approached him and the pair began talking.
Forder, a retired St. Louis judge, told Shakur she felt the sign was "taunting".
Shakir said he was holding the sign "So people feel disrespected the way I feel disrespected every day". Shakur feels that the United States was founded on white supremacy and that it still impacts his life.
The pair talked calmly for more than 5 minutes debating issues of race and violence. The conversation ended politely and they parted with an exchange of smiles.
"He's a smart young man. He's educated. But I'm very upset about the shooting of the police officer" said Forder who felt the conversation had been positive. Shakur felt differently about the conversation "She was being condescending".

<image:caption>Five years after the United States decleared war on Afghanistan the country has made progress while other things remain unchanged. Instablity in the southern part of the country, corruption and warlords lammenting their new diminished roles in society threaten to again destablize the Afghanistan. The Americans have spent billions to prop the county but the battle in Iraq is draining attention, money and troops away from Afghanistan.
