<image:title>Michael Brown Jr., Aug. 9, 2014</image:title>
<image:caption>On Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, Darren Wilson, a white Ferguson police officer in Missouri, shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man. Some witnesses say Brown had his hands raised over his head and was surrendering. Another account, according to an investigator, is that Brown assaulted Wilson, reached for the officer's gun and was charging toward the officer when he was shot.

Brown's death sparked a massive response from those upset with what they viewed as an unjustified shooting and the continued targeting of African-American people by police.

A candlelight vigil on Sunday, Aug. 10 for Brown turned violent as police and protesters squared off. The outnumbered police withdrew from the area to call in back up and crowds began to loot businesses and riot in the streets.

Weeks of sustained, sometimes violent, protests followed. On the most intense nights of unrest some protesters threw rocks, bottles, Molotov cocktails, fired gunshots and set fires. In response police used tear gas, rubber bullets and flashbang grenades to break up the crowd.

The days and weeks have stretched into months of protests. Protesters are calling for the arrest of Officer Wilson on murder charges and are seeking wider systematic change. Local, state and federal officials have all launched investigations into the shooting. Currently the region is waiting for the grand jury's decision about whether or not Officer Wilson will face charges in connection with the shooting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lezley McSpadden-Head visits the grave of her son Michael Brown at Saint Peter's Cemetery in Normandy on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024. Friday was the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown being shot and killed on Canfield Drive by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson. Brown's killing was the catalyst for protests and unrest around the world that focused on police accountability and civil rights and breathed life into the Black Lives Matter movement. About a half dozen family and friends joined McSpadden-Head at the grave where they laid down roses and released doves. She says she prefers to have a quiet day to remember her son on the anniversary of his death but celebrated her son's birthday in May with a party where local high school graduates were awarded college scholarshipsPhoto by David Carson, dcarson@post-dispatch.com</image:caption>

The spot on Canfield Drive is where Michael Brown laid four and half hours after he was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9, 2014. Family, friends, local activists and community members gather at the spot every year before a ceremony on Aug. 9th to mark the shooting. Brown's death ignited a new era of social activism and civil rights protests in the United States. Johnson was with Michael Brown when the shooting happened and the only known witness to the entire event, spoke to the crowd at the memorial. "I feel the pain of the family. Fietsam and a friend were crossing the Centaur Chute of the Missouri River when their canoe capsized as they were attempting to cross over to the Howell Island Conservation area to hunt turkeys. The strong current on river surprised the hunters as it sucked the boat into turbulant water, pictured to the right. Fietsam's hunting partner Leo Geringer clung to the boat and was able to make it to shore. Rescue workers presume Fietsam is dead. Divers will resume efforts to find Fietsam's body on Wednesay morning.

The bullet hole is from a shooting that injured three people at about 11:30 a.m. One man suffered a gun shot wound to the leg, another man was hit in his ankle and arm and a third victim sustained a graze wound to his arm. All three victims are expected to survive. The shots were fired from a car at a man who was walking in front of the market. "It's shocking" said Swink whose daughter lives in an apartment above the store. The heated argument occurred as a balloon release for four victims of a fatal hit-and-run crash was ending. The argument was over "disrespect" and involved multiple people with drawn guns on the street and people in a passing car with guns. Outnumbered and outgunned, police officers at the memorial put out an aid call requesting backup. "I don't give a f*** if the police are here" one of the men shouted. No shots were fired, no one was arrested, and the arguing parties fled as the sirens of many approaching police cars grew louder.Photo by David Carson, dcarson@post-dispatch.com</image:caption>

Forder, a retired St. Louis judge, told Shakur she felt the sign was "taunting".
Shakir said he was holding the sign "So people feel disrespected the way I feel disrespected every day". Shakur feels that the United States was founded on white supremacy and that it still impacts his life.
The pair talked calmly for more than 5 minutes debating issues of race and violence. The conversation ended politely and they parted with an exchange of smiles.
"He's a smart young man. He's educated. But I'm very upset about the shooting of the police officer" said Forder who felt the conversation had been positive. Shakur felt differently about the conversation "She was being condescending".
